PLEASANTON, Calif. (July 13, 2016) Gatan, a leading manufacturer of instrumentation and software used to enhance the performance of electron microscopes and 3D-Micromac AG, the industry leader in laser micromachining, today announced the signing of a joint sales and service agreement pertaining to the microPREP™, a laser ablation tool for the preparation of specimens for electron microscopy.

In transmission electron microscopy (TEM) a specimen must be made thin enough to be transparent to electrons. The most commonly used method uses focused ion beam instrumentation and is both costly and slow. Instead of ions the microPREP uses focused laser pulses to thin samples from a thickness of 2 mm to 10 µm in less than 1 hour over a very large area. The samples are then thinned to electron transparency with a broad ion beam tool, such as the Gatan PIPS™ II system.

For scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, the microPREP is ideally suited to cross section very large areas that are then finished with a broad ion beam tool such as the Gatan PECS™ II prior to imaging, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), or electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).

The microPREP is also well-matched for micromachining of specific shapes for micromechanical testing, atom probe tips, or cylindrical samples for micro computed tomography (micro-CT).

“I am very pleased with this agreement with 3D-Micromac, as the microPREP truly complements our current specimen preparation portfolio of products,” commented Sander Gubbens, President of Gatan. “With this new tool, we are now able to offer our customers complete, efficient workflows to prepare high quality specimens for a large range of applications areas.”

“We feel that with Gatan’s well-recognized brand and fully developed sales and service channels within the electron microscopy field, our microPREP will flourish best,” stated Uwe Wagner, Chief Sales Officer of 3D-Micromac. “The microPREP system was developed in cooperation of 3D-Micromac and Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS. It has a target market that is outside of our standard applications market and therefore, it is natural for us to find a partner who will solicit orders and provide first and second level service to said market.”
