Gatan Conducts First Imaging Workshops in India

Workshop at IIT Chennai

Workshop at CCMB

Gatan conducted its first series of imaging workshops in India on August 18-21, 2009. The workshops provided students with a primer on current digital imaging principles, hands-on training using Gatan’s imaging systems, and demonstrations of Gatan’s DigitalMicrograph® software. A key focus was to provide participants with practical tips and techniques on how to obtain high quality images using Gatan cameras and software.

One workshop was held at the Indian Institute of technology (IIT) in Chennai and a second at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad.  The two events were well attended with over 50 participants from both life and materials science backgrounds for the two workshops.

The program for the workshops consisted of lectures, microscope demonstrations, and off-line demonstrations of DigitalMicrograph® with simultaneous, live Q/A sessions.  “All students showed great interest in learning every aspect of digital imaging. I was impressed with and energized by their enthusiasm.  I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and interacting with the participants and learned a great deal from them as well,” said Dr. Ming Pan, the head instructor.

The team of Gatan instructors consisted of Dr. Ming Pan, VP of Business Development, Dr. Hans-Georg Pankau, Service and Application Scientist, Mr. Venkatram Dattu, Business Manager, India, Mr. D.V.R.P Raju, Application and Service Support, India, and Mr. Nilesh Hardikar of Harley Instruments.

Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive and clearly showed that the workshops met their educational and training objectives. Comments included: “The workshop was very well organized, and pitched at the right level, providing a broad based overview of digital imaging, and the principles of CCD camera operation. The analogy of using ‘bucket of water’ is excellent, especially to make lay audience understand the functioning of a CCD camera.” “(The workshop) was very useful. The basics of CCD cameras were covered in quite an elaborate way. The way Ming presented DigitalMicrograph (software) was also very good.”  “The presentations on cameras, off-line demonstrations (of DigitalMicrograph) and field explanations were very informative. ”
