2008 Scandinavian TEM Digital Imaging School
Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm University

May 6-8, 2008

Program

The TEM Digital Imaging School introduces all levels of TEM users to digital microscopy using Gatan’s CCD cameras and software imaging products. The course will explore the parameters necessary to optimize TEM image acquisition, processing, and analysis for biological and materials science applications. The course is designed for microscopists with substantive interest in TEM digital imaging and provides valuable training for Gatan camera users.

Held at the Arrhenius Laboratory at Stockholm University, the course will make use of the JEOL 2100F with a Gatan UltraScan 1000 camera, the JEOL 2100 with Gatan Orius SC1000 and Erlangshen 500W cameras and the JEOL 3010 with a Gatan MultiScan 600HP camera. These TEM-camera configurations will allow participants to gain hands-on experience with both top and bottom-mounted imaging systems.

The number of participants is limited to 20, to ensure the best quality hands-on sessions for all attendees.

Topics

  • Concepts of digital imaging using CCD cameras.
  • Optimizing image acquisition using Orius™, UltraScan™, MultiScan™, and Erlangshen™ CCD
    cameras.
  • Manipulation and processing to maximize image content and quality.
  • Image presentation, formats and output.
  • Image measurement, analysis and morphology.
  • Automated microscope control and auto-tuning.

Format

Each day's activities will consist of lectures and TEM microscope and offline practical sessions. These practicals will be supervised by Gatan specialists and will provide participants with hands-on practice on a variety of cameras, microscopes and digital-imaging techniques. Off-line computers are available for students to process and review both data collected from the microscope sessions and pre-recorded data. Because the school is applications oriented, the number of participants in each practical session will be small to encourage interaction and exchange of information. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own well-documented TEM specimens.

Costs and Registration

The cost is approximately 6000SEK; the actual cost has not yet been finalized. Lunches and refreshments will be included and also a “celebration dinner.” Participants are responsible for their own hotel and travel arrangements and costs. Non-local participants should plan on arriving in Stockholm on Monday, May 5, 2008 to allow for the start of the school at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
