Automatic, micro-processor controlled electrolytic thinning of TEM specimens. With the built-in scanning function and additional enhancement functions, parameters for new materials can easily be added. Specimens of 2.3 and 3 mm diameter are polished from both sides simultaneously to achieve a thin foil with a center hole as small as possible in only a few minutes. Polishing the specimen from both sides also provides a structure with a minimum of deformation. The thinning is controlled by an infrared light source. When the perforation appears, the polishing can automatically be stopped by the infra-red detector, and the specimen is ready for a TEM examination. No special operator training is required. Also electrolytical pre-thinning or blanking can easily be carried out.
