Overview

Hands on course designed to instruct the art and science of TEM specimen preparation using Broad Beam milling. The course concentrates on various ion milling techniques now available and demonstrates methods by which excellent TEM specimens can be produced from almost any material. Special attention will be given to the preparation of cross-sections through surfaces and interfaces. The materials used in the laboratory sessions will include semiconductors, metals, ceramics, and their combinations.

• Pre-preparation steps for producing plan-view, cross-sectional, powder, and fiber specimens
• TEM specimen disc preparation and mechanical disc grinding
• Dimple grinding and polishing
• Wedge polishing
• Automated polishing technique
• Chemical Assisted Ion Beam Etching (CAIBE)
• Low-angle and low-energy ion milling (down to 200eV)
• New PIPS cool stage applications
• Precision Ion Polishing using high resolution/high magnification imaging system

Format

This 3-day course includes lectures by guest speakers, lab equipment demonstrations and hands-on specimen preparation sessions. Students are encouraged to bring their own sample materials in disc or bulk form. Students will be divided into groups for the laboratory sessions based on their interest in specimen types and materials. Gatan's complete line of TEM specimen preparation equipment will be available:

Ultrasonic Cutter
Disc Grinder
Cross-Sectioning Kit
Dimple Grinder
Wedge polisher (T-Tool) as well as the Precision Ion Polishing System (PIPS™) equipped with a CCD camera and the Gatan High-Resolution Ion Beam Coater

Prepared samples will be viewed in our on-site TEM labs on a JEOL 2010 or Philips Tecnai 20. Each student will receive a detailed binder covering course topics and lecture papers presented during the course.

A completed school registration form and confirmed payment are required to secure your place in the school. The school registration fee includes all educational materials, daily breakfast and lunch at the Gatan Research and Development Facility, a certificate of completion, and a celebration dinner. Travel, accommodations, and other meals are not included.

Accommodations

Course participants are responsible for making their own hotel arrangements. Gatan recommends the Larkspur Landing Hotel, which is approximately 1.3 miles from Gatan. Gatan school participants receive a preferred rate of US $94/night (Studio Suite) and free 5 mile shuttle service. We recommend making reservations at least 30 days before the first day of the school. Please mention that you are a “Gatan visitor” when you make your reservations.
