Advanced Applications for Gatan Analytical Imaging Filter

The Gatan Imaging Filter (GIF) advanced application training covers the fundamentals of imaging filter microscopy and operating principles of GIF Continuum™, GIF Quantum®, Enfinium™ and GIF Tridiem® systems, plus how they relate to your application demands. The training takes place at your facility and allows individualized attention to your specific applications. The training is composed of lectures and practical sessions. During the lectures, design principles and theory of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) are presented. Operations of the energy filtered system are reviewed, followed by optimization techniques for your application(s). Furthermore, attention is paid to the recognition of GIF misalignments and correct alignment procedures to insure obtaining good data from your system. In the practical sessions, participants gain hands-on equipment experience with customer samples to illustrate the benefits from optimization. All participants are invited to carry out practical equipment assignments after demonstration by the Gatan applications specialist. The course duration is 2 – 3 days.

After the course, participants will understand how to:

  • Design and construction of the Gatan GIF system
  • EELS Theory for energy filtered imaging and spectroscopy
  • Correct experimental setup, including collection and convergence angles of the GIF system
  • Calculate and calibrate collection and convergence angles
  • Obtain elemental maps, and EELS spectra
  • Quantify EELS Spectra
  • Acquire and analyze STEM spectrum images (optional)
  • Use advanced techniques, including multiple least squares (MLS) and non-linear least squares (NLS) curve fitting to obtain data from overlapping or weak peaks
