2021 University of Wisconsin – Madison Facilities Days Open House

The seventh annual Facilities Days Open House hosted by the Wisconsin Centers for Nanoscale Technology and the Materials Research Science and Engineering will offer tutorials for common microscopy and microanalysis techniques. Graduate students, faculty, and industrial users, across all scientific and engineering disciplines, will benefit from the intensive sessions covering structural biology measurement techniques, nanofabrication, microscopy, and microanalysis analytical methods.

Gatan is a major sponsor of the UW-Madison Facilities Days Open House. We invite you to the Gatan EELS tutorial at 11:15 – 11:45 a.m. Our scientists will be presenting the current applications and technology for advanced EELS and EFTEM. If you have any questions about our EELS instruments and software, please contact Bill Flosi. He will be at the event. We look forward to meeting you at the Open House.

Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy in the Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope

Liam Spillane, Ph.D., Analytical Application Scientist, Gatan, Inc.

Electron energy-loss spectrum imaging (EELS-SI) is well established as a powerful tool for materials analysis. The wealth of information available beyond simple composition, coupled with high signal collection efficiency in next-generation imaging filters makes this technique particularly advantageous for advanced analysis and mapping. A review of EELS fundamentals will be given, followed by a presentation of typical application examples that highlight central EELS-SI data processing and visualization methods such as: elemental quantification, linear least-squares fitting and multivariate analysis.
