Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)

Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) FAQs

Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is an advanced analytical technique performed within a scanning electron microscope (SEM). EBSD works by directing an electron beam onto a tilted crystalline sample surface. The interaction between the electrons and the crystal lattice generates unique diffraction patterns, which are captured and analyzed. By interpreting these patterns, EBSD reveals the crystallographic orientation and phase of the material, enabling researchers to map microstructural features such as grain boundaries, texture, and local strain with high spatial resolution.
