所谓固体的发光现象,是固体在外来能量源的激发下发射光子的过程,而阴极发光(CL)指的是激发能量源为高能电子的情况。尽管您可能对阴极发光这一术语本身并不熟悉,但您在生活中肯定早已见过阴极发光现象。我们中的大多数人,都(曾)看到过使用阴极射线管(电子枪)来激发磷屏发光的显示设备(显示器或电视机)或透射电镜中的绿色观察屏。

许多不同的材料体系都具备阴极发光能力,包括磷光体、半导体、陶瓷、地质矿物、宝石、有机复合物以及(部分)应用于纳米光子学应用的金属结构等。针对样品发光的分析能够揭示出其中往往无法用其它表征手段获取的重要的结构和功能性质。

当发射光谱学遇上电子显微术

阴极发光显微术是对材料在电子显微镜中的发光现象进行分析表征的手段;发光可能处于电磁波谱上的紫外、可见光以及红外的波长范围内。

在电子显微镜中,我们可以通过使用亚纳米尺度直径的电子束,在样品表面进行扫描,从而获得具有空间分辨的信息(图像或分布图)。在电子显微镜中对阴极发光信号进行采集和分析,这一强大的技术能够将发射光谱学带来的功能发光信息,同电子显微镜提供的高空间分辨率结合起来。因此,阴极发光在涵盖宽广的诸多应用和研究领域,特别是光学性能、材料科学以及地质学的研究中,成为极具潜力的表征技术。
