概要: 

カソードルミネッセンスとは?

ルミネッセンスは光、電子、電界といったエネルギー源によって励起された際に固体から光子が放出される現象であり、カソードルミネッセンス(CL)は、特に高エネルギーの電子によって励起された際に光子が光として放出される現象を指します。ただこれまでCLという用語について馴染みが無い場合でも、これまでにどこかで必ず見たことがある現象の筈です。蛍光スクリーンから光を生成するための陰極線管(電子銃)を用いたディスプレイ(コンピュータモニターやテレビ)で多くの方がCLをご覧になっています。あるいは透過型電子顕微鏡の緑色に発光する蛍光板についても同様です。

 

 

多くの材料がCLを示し、蛍光体、半導体、セラミクス、地質鉱物、宝石、有機化合物、そしてナノフォトニクス用途の(一部の)金属構造で確認されます。放出光を解析することで、他の手法では不可能な試料の重要な構造と機能特性を明らかにすることが可能です。

電子顕微鏡と光放出スペクトロスコピーとの出会い

カソードルミネッセンス顕微鏡法は、電子顕微鏡中の試料から放出された光を解析する手法を指します。その光は電磁スペクトルの一部の波長である紫外、可視光、赤外の光を含みます。

電子顕微鏡では、サブナノメートル径の電子ビームで試料表面を走査することで空間分解した情報が得られます(像やマッピング)。電子顕微鏡中でCL信号を収集し解析することで、電子顕微鏡の高い空間分解能とルミネッセンススペクトロスコピーの機能的な光学情報とが組み合わされた強力な手法となります。これによってCLは広いアプリケーション分野と研究分野、特に光学研究、材料科学、地球科学においては魅力的な手法となります。
